Can you prevent the town of Defiance from the wrath of God? Well, your opportunity to eliminate the scourge will present itself in the video game version of the on-air TV show of the same name, as the game has been updated to coordinate with the events of the TV show in what looks to be an effort to keep things fresh in the massive online shooter that has received mixed reactions from reviewers and players.
Starting June 3, in what game developer Trion Worlds and TV show producer Syfy are dubbing a “crossover event,” players will be introduced to new game modes, new emergencies, more pursuits, and new missions. The rolling update will have players racing to fight a plague that has devastated San Francisco and is approaching the town of Defiance. The first update of the “episodic content” was released on May 28 with players scavenging for three “data recorders” throughout the game world. Trion Worlds is marketing one of the great “features” of the game as its ability to seamlessly incorporate new game content from one week to another “without requiring server patches and down time.” This means that gamers can suddenly stumble upon a new mission, game mode, or event whilst trekking through the open game world.
The update will foreshadow events that will take place in the television episode airing June 17, where word of the infectious plague has caused the town to be stricken with fear. Doc Yewll, the town doc, attempts to find a cure and sends a distress call to a colleague in the Bay Area in an effort to prepare for the virus.
The details of the free game update include a new game mode called The Plague Sieges, eight new emergencies, two new pursuits, a new data recorder, and a new mission series that will run from June 10 to 17.
The TV show premiered on April 15 and is on episode six of its first season. The video game was released on April 2.
On May 10, Syfy announced that it renewed Defiance for a 13-episode second season that is set to air in 2014.
