Prison Architect is Introversion’s best selling game
British Indie developer Introversion Software announce that their latest game, Prison Architect, has now been enjoyed by over 250,000 people
From the outside looking in you would think that a small independent games company would know exactly how many copies each of their games had sold. However, this is surprisingly difficult to do. In the past it has proved hard to get accurate sales figures from retailers (just one of the ways they used to screw the developers). Couple that with the multitude of digital distribution companies all claiming to be the next ‘Steam’ who don’t even bother generating a royalty report. A few years ago Introversion attempted to provide a best guess for each of Uplink, Darwinia, Defcon and Multiwinia and estimated that each game had sold 100,000 units (all be it at radically different price points).
With Prison Architect there was the opportunity to start from scratch in all sorts of areas, one of which was accurately tracking the sales count by being very selective on who Introversion partnered with. We also decided to make these sales figures public on our website as we hoped it would aid other Indie companies in making their games successful. Today, we are truly amazed to have 250,000 players involved in the Alpha making it by far our most successful game to date.
With the help of crowd funding and inspired by kickstarter, Introversion decided to create their own system which would allow them to retain control over every aspect of the process. The 250,000 units have generated almost $8 million worth of revenue which is a figure Introversion Software never dreamed of achieving. This investment by the alpha customers is enabling them to turn Prison Architect into the game Introversion envisioned without having to make any creative sacrifices or cut any corners – the the very reason Introversion is proud to be independent.
“We never would have believed that one of our games would be so popular and we want to thank everyone that is supporting Prison Architect and helping us turn it into a concrete reality”
– Mark Morris
