The developers of Star Trek The Video Game have announced that the upcoming game will allow players to explore the iconic U.S.S. Enterprise. Since the inception of the first Star Trek series, the Enterprise has represented the adventure and excitement of exploring new planets and discovering alien civilisations.
However, up until now the starship has mostly been viewable only through the comparatively narrow lense of a TV or film camera.
With the release of Star Trek The Video Game, players will be able to get a much deeper and more interactive look at the interior of the Enterprise as they play as Kirk and Spock and attempt to combat the Gorn, a classic alien race first introduced in the original Star Trek series. Part of the game will re-introduce players to familiar parts of the ship such as the bridge, transporter rooms and engine rooms, while never before seen locations will also feature, giving players a chance to explore areas such as the turbolift shafts, observation lounges, engineering decks and officer’s quarters.
Brian Miller, senior vice president of Paramount Pictures and executive producer of the new Star Trek game feels that “video games [give] the opportunity to take audiences to places that are only hinted at” in other media. He reflects that allowing fans to explore the Enterprise is “one of the more exciting aspects of [the] video game, and is something he “can’t wait to share with Star Trek fans… worldwide”.
Miller also feels that the Enterprise is one of the most important characters from the Star Trek series, making it important that it “looks, feels and even sounds as true to life as anything players have ever seen.” With this in mind, the development team of the game has been working closely with the creative team behind the 2009 Star Trek film to ensure that the ship feels as authentic as possible.
Star Trek the Video Game will be released for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on April 26.
