Underwater, rhythm-based puzzle game, Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is now available to download for PC, Mac and Linux.
Developed by German developer THREAKS, the game uniquely interweaves gameplay and music, combining colourful hand-painted world with a range of varied music from a host of renowned DJs and composers, including Austin Wintory, the Grammy-nominated composer behind games like Journey, Monaco and flOw.
The player takes control of Beatbuddy, a creature who is woken from eternal slumber to protect the musical freedom of the world of Symphonia from Prince Maestro. Along the way, Beatbuddy meets a number of musical-themed characters, including Harmony, Clef, Trebble and Quaver, who aid him in his quest.
The game utilises unique sound technology to synchronise activity and movement in the game world with the musical soundtrack of the game. The challenge for the player is to ‘play to the beat’ of their environment to overcome obstacles and challenges as they explore the underwater world of Symphonia. To keep players on their toes each level has a completely different song, meaning that the rhythm of the game is constantly changing, with players having to change their approach and timing for each new level they unlock.
According to Wolf Lang, Co-Ceo and Co-Founder of THREAKS, the game turned out exactly as they had hoped:
“Beatbuddy is the exact experience we wanted to deliver. What started as a student project to sync sound in an innovative, engaging video game has become a completely new way to experience music and gameplay together. On behalf of the THREAKS team, we hope that players have a blast as they explore the mystical world of Symphonia.”
The game has achieved critical acclaim even before its release, winning ‘Best Art’ and ‘Best Sound’ in Intel’s 2012 Level Up Game Demo Contest, which rewards student game developers for their efforts in creating their a game.
Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is available right now for $14.99, though Steam users have got an exclusive opportunity to download the game with a 10% discount in celebration of its launch.
