Disney Registers Star Wars: Attack Squadron Domains

Disney Registers Star Wars: Attack Squadron Domains

In the past year we have seen Disney register very few domains for new projects, be that films, TV shows or video games. However, today comes the reveal that Disney have registered several domains for the title of ‘Star Wars: Attack Squadron’. This name leans more towards a video game than it does to a new TV series because in 2007 we saw the release of Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron and then again in 2009 we saw the release of Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron, for the Playstation Portable and the Nintendo DS. The word ‘squadron’ was used in both of these titles and suggests space combat because squadron means an operational flight of two or more aircraft, also known as the two Capital Ships, that are often found in Star Wars Battlefront games.

The registrations include names like StarWarsAttackSquadrons.com, SWAttackSquadrons.com, AttackSquadrons.com and AttackSquadron.us. This further suggests that a game is being developed because the name ‘Attack Squadrons’ links in with Electronic Arts, as they have owned the domains AttackSquadron.com and AttackSquadron.net for a number of years. In total, Disney registered about four dozen AttackSquadron domain names last Friday, July 26, suggesting it’s intent on protecting the intellectual property.

Recently, Disney gave exclusive gaming rights to EA to create games for “a core gaming audience”, with games “spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres”. We already know that Battlefield developer – DICE, are busy creating a new Battlefront title, so this leaves Visceral Games and Bioware to create a new a title, this does not mean that DICE could not be working on this project as well, because DICE are known to be working on multiple projects including Battlefield 4 and the new Battlefront title.

From this information, we can tell that Star Wars: Attack Squadron is most definitely a game but the decision is still in the balance of whether it will be a third game in the Battlefront Squadron titles for the the PSP and Nintendo DS or will this be a revolutionary console title? Only time will tell, is the force strong with this game or will it be another game to upset gamers? Leave your thoughts, on whether you think this is going to be a portable or console title, below.
