Double Dragon: Neon Out Today

Majesco Entertainment announced the release of Double Dragon: Neon. It is available on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Double Dragon: Neon is a sidescrolling beat ‘em up; one of those game types that are all the rage these days because they were all the rage 20 years ago and apparently both the industry and the indie market is completely out of ideas. And why bother making new games when you can jazz up and bedazzle some old games and call it “innovative.” I know I’m looking forward to the day when I can play cover-based shooting games in a gray/brown landscape all over again, because in 20 years that will be considered nostalgic too.

Double Dragon: Neon gives players the chance to play as Billy or Jimmy as they fight to win back their “shared love interest Marian.” So far we’ve got 80’s action hero names, and two guys fighting for the same girl, which is not considered weird at all. Let’s see if I remember my 80’s storylines correctly. Was she killed by a bad guy and now they’re out for revenge? No, that’s too 90’s. Was she not in any actual danger at all because it was all a dream? Wrong again, that’s from the early 2000’s. What if the player gets to play as Marian as she tries to escape two men who think they own her purely because they express romantic interest in her? Nope. That is something that will never happen in the video game industry regardless of time period. Oh, it looks like they’re going for the classic Mario storyline where a bad guy kidnaps the lady in the story, and the bad guy’s name in this case is “Skullmagedden.” Still not 80’s enough. There’s still something missing… Wait, it looks like players get to “pair up with their pals for local “bro-op” play.” There it is. I was just missing the word “bro.” Now it’s officially an 80’s game.
