GameStick, a system which allows people to play Android games on their television using a USB stick and a controller, surpassed its Kickstarter goal today. They raised $100,000 in 30 hours. “We have been inundated with messages of support and suggestions on how to improve GameStick from both the gamers & developers worldwide who backed our project. Being at the pre-production phase, we have been able to incorporate a lot of these ideas into our roadmap. We were not prepared for that level of input but it has been fantastic,” said Anthony Johnson, CMO, Playjam.
Since there is a huge fan following for GameStick, they’ve added new funding goals for the project, including offering the product in black and white if they hit a $320,000 goal and offering more memory options like a MicroSD slot, which will be available if they reach their $560,000 goal. GameStick already offers players free cloud storage, but the MicroSD addition will create more flexibility in using it in different spaces. This has been a huge year for Kickstarter, and I was starting to get Kickstarter fatigue. There is so much stuff being launched and funded on the site every day and it just seems ripe for abuse and disappointment, but after seeing GameStick and Ouya, I’m much more interested in the mobile games world than I used to be. The openness of the Android market and the quality of some of the games offered there is pretty amazing, especially when you consider how cheap the whole thing is.
