Guild Wars 2 is already setting landmarks in being one of the most innovative MMORPGs released so far.
It's pretty common to find a good game, but very rare to find a game that claims to "redefine the MMORPG genre," as Eurogamer.es claims. Developers like BioWare have tried redefining the MMORPG with emphasis of storytelling and role-playing in Star Wars: The Old Republic. However, with Guild Wars 2 selling like mad that it got over a million players logging in during the Headstart period, there might be something Guild Wars 2 is doing right. Because right now Guild Wars 2 stands as number one in the official All Formats charts for UK, Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, Swden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Mike O' Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet (developers of Guild Wars 1 & 2), is very humbled by the success in Europe. "Our games have always been well-received in Europe, but this level of enthusiasm is both awesome and humbling. It also impresses upon us the responsibility we have to our players and explains why we’ve taken steps recently to constrain sales of Guild Wars 2 to ensure the highest quality of service. Of course, we hope to remedy this in the near future.”
Guild Wars 2 tries to focus on events that reward cooperation and skill in combat than other MMORPGs. Dynamic events occur naturally and in response to players' actions. Anyone that participates in these is rewarded to change the game world to their own preferences. Survival in combat is based on timing, skill and movement – not numbers or who has the slower cool-down for their fireball spell. Players need to trigger well-timed dodges and counter with combo attacks if they wish to succeed in Guild Wars 2.
But if you are a person that wants to join up with a few friends to stomp on a Charr's face, there is Player vs. Player in Guild Wars 2. These matches make sure everyone is on the same level in terms of health and equipment, so only skill will determine success. If you are looking for a global war that could last for two weeks (!), participate in the World vs. World mode where your server fights against another server in intense war over huge maps.
