Lili
I’m intrigued by the idea of games that rely on non-combat mechanics in their video games. We got a variety of games that revolve around thrusting swords into torsos, emptying bullets into heads, or casting spells that melt the skin off humans, so violence is something that has become a norm in our game community. Extra Credits hypothesized that we could make non-violent games by applying the mechanics of combat games to non-combat scenarios, which seems easy to implement and would make original games, in my opinion. I believe BitMonster Games has the same idea, with their Quirky Adventure RPG Lili coming to the iOS mobile platform.
Lili will put players in the shoes of the main character with the same name as she explores the mysterious island of Geos. There Lili will meet up with a variety of people there, explore beautiful environments and even challenge an oppresive regime through an amusing “non-combat” system. The game will be developed through the Unreal Engine 3, so BitMonster will ensure that we will get a Triple-A game that should appeal to everyone.
“Epic has been extremely supportive of our new studio and in helping us build the game of our dreams,” said Lee Perry, president of BitMonster. “We set out to create an adventure that is appropriate for nearly anyone. As a designer, it’s exciting to see that the Unreal Engine 3 tools are better than ever, and they provide everything we need to achieve a gratifying and imaginative experience.”
Not much else is known about Lili aside from the teaser trailer above. The trailer does show some interesting worlds to explore, and Lili herself looks to be a rare breed of female protagonists in video games that are not sexualized or beaten up. It seems like the inhabitants of Geos are wooden Robots that live in a overgrown ruins, so it might be a fun world to explore. Unfortunately, no hints of gameplay are shown in the trailer, such as the “non-combat” system they promise.
Lili will be released for iOS mobile devices. No release date has been announced. Visit the BitMonster Web site for more information.
