Sega released the first mobile-based Sonic game with Sonic Jump. It will be available for $1.99 in the iTunes App store. I’m happy to see publishers taking their older games and properties and releasing them for smartphones and mobile devices. I hope this becomes a trend, because I want to be able to play games I played when I was younger on mobile devices and pay little for that privilege. I would be ecstatic if I could play any Pokemon game on my iPad. I would also be pleased if they did a realistic take on Pokemon for consoles, because that game would be awesome. Pokemon Snap was not enough Nintendo, and you know it.
Sonic Jump has introduced new mechanics into the Sonic universe: “You know just how fast Sonic can run; now you can check out just how high he can jump as you tilt your screen to leap through a range of stunning new levels and classic zones from the Sonic universe.” Players will be able to fight Dr. Robotnik in a story mode and challenge friends in an arcade mode. So now Sonic is doing platforming, which makes sense when you take a look at the path he’s been on for the past several years. He was in 3D, he was a werewolf, and he ran into a version of himself from the past. After trying to capture the success of 3D glasses, Twilight, and Back to the Future, it was inevitable that he was going to try to mimic the success of Mario. Maybe the next Sonic game will show him wearing overalls and fighting for the affections of a princess who is always in another castle.
