Ouya free-to-play sales are “better than expected” according to CEO Julie Uhrman

OUYA, THE ANDROID based gaming and entertainment console who ran a successful Kickstarter funded campaign last year, stated that only 27 percent of Ouya owners have purchased content. This means a whopping 73 nexusae0_UI-mockSmallpercent of users have yet to purchase content on the console which was released on June 25 in the United States.

OUYA CEO JULIE UHRMAN, believes these are positive figures for a console which launched barely a month ago.

“”I think there are a lot of social and mobile app developers that would kill for an 8 per cent attach rate on a platform that’s 30 days old,” she said.

Yet Uhrman also revealed that thirteen of the Ouya marketplace’s top selling games have attracted an average of eight percent of users purchasing the full title. The best-selling title on Ouya, Towerfall, has earned developer Matt Thorson $21,000 at a price of $14.99.

“These numbers will grow as more gamers pick up consoles, and as we attract more developers, and I believe that by the end of the year, we’ll see a few developers telling us they’ve made more than a million dollars on Ouya.” –Uhrman

The console is open to developers who want to make games for the TV and even comes with a software development kit with the purchase. Every unit is a debug console and built to be hacked and customized. With all the focus on giving developers freedom to create, Ouya is bound to have an influx of new games. Free or not, their potential revenue shows promise but it’s much too early in the game to tell.
