Space Engineers – a new sandbox game from Keen Software House

Keen Software House unveils “Space Engineers”, the company’s new sandbox title!

Keen Software House has revealed its next title, Space Engineers. Space Engineers is the upcoming sandbox game developed by Czech indie game studio Keen Software House, the game focuses on engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. According to Keen Software the game is based on real physics and technology that would be feasible in the near future.

“Space Engineers is inspired by reality and by how things work, think about modern-day NASA technology extrapolated 60 years into the future”

Space engineers keen software housePlayers will have the ability to build space ships and space stations (either for military or civil applications), build and pilot ships or travel to the farthest asteroid to mine resources. The game combines a sandbox experience with the heart of resource management games, every object has a specific characteristic, some may have storage capabilities; others will have electricity consumption or production. The player will have to maintain a constant stream of raw materials to keep the station running the way it is intended.

“If you want your lights to operate, better connect them to a grid so they can receive power from a nuclear reactor, which needs uranium to keep running. If you interrupt the grid, the power is lost. If you overload the grid, some consumers get shut down.”

The Idea behind Space engineers came as a result of the company’s previous title: Miner Wars. The company wanted to focus on construction and sandbox mechanics and integrate them with their in-house game engine. According to Keen Software House the game takes advantage of a realistic volumetric-based physics engine (The VRAGE 2.0, )  which allows all objects to be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed.

SPACE ENGINEERS- ALPHA

Even though the game was built around construction and resource management aspects, it CAN be played as a shooter; however, the development team has stated that they expect players to make use of their creativity to build war machines and fortifications instead of engaging in direct apelike man-to-man combat.

The game is currently in its alpha stage but it will be made available on Steam Early Access, the core gameplay is “almost finished” that is, creative mode, volumetric physics, piloting ships, character animations destructible objects etc. Sound design is still under development.
