AIOMI, the Italian Movement for Videogame Culture have announced that Rome is about to be peacefully invaded by Space Invaders.

The original arcade machines will be held in the interactive area of the museum and be both fully functioning and playable.

The Space Invaders arcade game is the original coin-op of Tomohiro Nishikado’s gaming staple. Space Invaders is one of the earliest shooting games. The aim of the game  is to defeat waves of aliens with a laser cannon and earn as many points as possible.

Marco Accordi Rickards, director of VIGAMUS spoke about the games place in the museum stating:

“SPACE INVADERS® isn’t just a video game, but a milestone of the whole history of the medium.” … “The participation of TAITO Corporation to our project makes our Museum even more international and complete”.

Space Invaders will permanently remain in the interactive section of the Video Game Museum of Rome from Saturday November 3rd. Its arrival will also be celebrated with a conference dedicated to the famous space shooter which has become an icon to Video Games.

Yoichi Wada, the President of Taito also commented on the event saying:

“Thirty years have passed since the release of our first computer game, Space Invaders. This starting point is very important to us, and as a result we have taken Space Invaders as the logo under which we conduct business. The current  development of information technology is bringing about a fusion of games, music, and movies. This results in a new entertainment synthesis. We see our task as moving out of the current entertainment box to creating new kinds of fun. By moving ahead to expand the services we provide, we intend to configure ourselves to provide “stories” that transcend the limitations of genre or media.”

Space Invaders will be availableto view and play permanently at the VIGAMUS from November 3rd.
