Main characters Ellie and Joel in The Last of Us move their way through the remains of a hotel only to have a rough encounter with some raiders.
EA asked a question long ago on whether a video game could make us cry. The new video for The Last of Us from Naughty Dog (developers of Uncharted, Jak and Daxter Collection) might not be a game that could bring you to tears, but for 16 minutes it does make you feel how ruthless you have to be in a world where civilization has ended. I won't get into too much spoilers as the footage is worth a watch. But I will say this: Connecting a pipe to a person's face is not as awesome as it sounds in your typical video game.
The Last of Us focuses around the relationship of Ellie and Joel (in order, voiced by Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker). The beginning of the plot is still unknown, but there seems to be some kind of fungal plague released that wiped out most of humanity. A few survivors like Joel survived, and the next generation (Ellie) were born in the aftermath. The Last of Us starts 20 years after the fungal plague and Joel makes a promise to smuggle Ellie to safety. The games unique catalyst for the apocalypse introduces an aesthetic where we see familiar landmarks in North America covered in vegetation, along with being eerily quiet. One area shows off the city of Pittsburgh with water flooding the streets, possible damage from earthquakes and nature growing over buildings. Along the way Ellie and Joel will have to fight against a variety of opponents: From raiders, unfriendly survivors, to even infected humans that 'kind of' survived after the fungal plague.
The most impressive part for the gameplay footage of The Last of Us, for me, would be the Artificial Intelligence. The enemies try getting away from you if they see you got an advantage, or they may not go into full alert if they hear a bottle break (assuming it to be rats). There might be some kinks in the system, such as around the 12:55 mark. But at least the enemies seem smart in here than sliding down a ramp.
The Last of Us is an exclusive action adventure game for the PlayStation 3. It is scheduled for release in 2013.
