Windows 8 will be coming out this Friday, and so far things aren’t looking great. Developers and game industry veterans like Gabe Newell and Notch have already lodged their complaints with Microsoft about the new Windows OS. Many feel that Microsoft is trying to compete with Apple by making the new Windows more app-centric, which leaves a lot of developers and users out in the cold.
It is creating a new era of the closed-platform PC, all in an attempt to beat Apple at their own game. Good luck with that Microsoft. Trying to mimic what someone else has done first or has done better always pans out. I mean, Bing is nothing but a complete success story. Who has ever even heard of Google?
The New York times did a short piece on the Windows 8 change, and things began to sound even worse. Windows 8 features a “tile” system, most likely because of Apple’s big win against Samsung over rectangles with rounded edges. It was a good idea for Microsoft to not try to win that battle, so sharp angles it is! Seasoned Windows users look completely confused by the new interface, since Microsoft did away with the start bar. Users on the video find themselves accidentally closing windows, uncertain how to open windows, and completely in the dark when it comes to how to open an email application.
I like my PC because I can have multiple windows open and because I know where everything is. The change from Windows 7 to Windows 8 is huge, and it will be fascinating to see how the larger public reacts to the change.
