The creators of MMO Wurm Online, Codeclub AB, have teamed up with composer and producer Tom E Morrison to produce a Concept Album based on the game’s soundtrack.
The album, titled ‘Meditation and Work’, is the first of three new concept releases by Codeclub AB, and is described as an update to the MMO’s existing soundtrack. The two albums to follow are titled ‘Travel & Exploration’ and ‘Battle & Danger’ and each release is focussed on a different aspect of the game, as indicated by their titles. Codeclub AB has said that they hope the albums will tell a complex story and elicit powerful emotions from listeners that will add to the gaming experience offered by Wurm Online.
Codeclub’s CEO, Rolf Jansson says that the company had always envisaged a concept album release for Wurm Online’s soundtrack:
“I want to strike a blow for making video games more accepted as an art form. The music was created with a concept album release in mind. It had to work ingame as well of course, so initially it was a matter of finding the right artist.“
The company decided to go with Tom E Morrison, a prolific composer and producer with past experience in film, television and the music industry:
“I came across Tom’s work while listening to eastern lounge music. His songs stood out with the high quality moods and I thought, this would be perfect for Wurm!‘”
Andy Jackson, who previously worked as a sound engineer for Pink Floyd, was also involved in the production of the album. Jansson claims that Jackson’s previous work on concept albums made him perfect for the project:
“It’s fantastic. He was involved in making The Wall, the greatest concept album of all time. And here he is 30 years later, involved in making our first game concept album as well!“
The release is the latest manifestation of Codeclub’s recent drive towards further developing and updating the MMO and the experience for the player. Alongside the release of the album, Codeclub posted a new developer diary episode discussing the album:
‘Meditation and Work’ is now available on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon.
