The turn-based strategy sequel fans have wanted for the XCOM franchise is nearly a month away, and is now accepting pre-orders.
I'm looking at the launch of XCOM: Enemy Unknown with some mixed thoughts. On one hand I love a great turn-based game that has a great strategic depth and RPG elements. Based on what I've seen and heard, the XCOM series seems to deliver all of my turn-based fantasies. On the other hand – I never played the original XCOM game before, which might make me a target for PC gamers to demand that I fix this fast. Still, with the release of XCOM: Enemy Unknown coming around the corner its worth looking into, especially with the potential bonus content provided.
Anyone that pre-orders XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be given the Elite Soldier Pack DLC. This will offer top-of-the-line soldier customization features, from aesthetics to a unique character from the original XCOM. The classic soldier, complete with blonde, flattop hairstyle will be available in the barracks. Don't like his hairstyle? Then you are given full access to customize the color of him or any soldier, or apply a variety of decoration features to improve their armor appearance.
The digital version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available from popular digital service sites like GamersGate.com and Steam – but it will primarily use Steamworks features. Steamworks features will be included like achievements, auto-updates, multiplayer matchmaking, and Steam cloud support in this game. You can also pre-order the game from XCOM's Web site.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a sequel to a popular PC game released in 1993. In the game you work as a commander that guides a series of soldiers through hostile areas claimed by aliens. Defeat these aliens and you could learn their technology, thus giving yourself an advantage in the battlefield against the next alien horde. Any soldiers that survive could learn new skills and level up. The game requires players to manage their resources carefully while at base, learning alien technology along with doing your own research while engaging in intense tactical combat on the field.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available on the PC this October 9, 2012.
