Xbox One won’t have any vertical support, use at your own risk says Microsoft.
The upcoming Xbox One wants to be kept flat on the ground, it wasn’t designed to be used upright. An interview was published on Thursday by GameSpot, Microsoft’s senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, Albert Panello has said that it shouldn’t be placed on the side because it has a slot-loading drive.
“We don’t support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk,” he said. “It wouldn’t be a cooling problem, we just didn’t design the drive for vertical. Because it’s a slot loading drive, we just didn’t design it for both.”
I find this preposterous, absurd and a joke. We’re heading into the next generation of gaming, yet we have this issue? I have my Xbox 360 standing up because it’s the only way to make it fit with my other consoles. I don’t want to play Jenga with my Xbox just so I can prevent any issues that having it upright might have.
Funnily enough the Playstation 3 and 4 both have a slot-loading drive, yet I haven’t heard of this issue before. I don’t want to have to stack my consoles, and I’m sure a lot will agree with me. However Panello backs up his point with some statistics, claiming that 80 percent of gamers have their Xbox 360 horizontally. Being one man I can’t prove this wrong, but that’s beside the point. I think it’s stupid to have restrictions like that, you might call it nit-picking but I find it a stupid design choice if we’re heading into the next generation of gaming and this is still a restriction. I don’t dislike the Xbox, I prefer it over my PS3 because it was always more social and I’m sure that the Xbox One will be an improvement upon it.
So you’ll be able to pick up your Xbox One on November 22nd, I’ll probably pick mine up next year when they release a new Xbox One with this issue fixed.
