To the surprise of no one Apple’s latest release, the iPhone 5, has been a success, however, the sheer popularity of the new smartphone has been somewhat unprecedented. Initial sales of the device have reached over 5 Million, beating launch sales of its predecessor, the iPhone4S, by one million.
To put the iPhone 5’s success into context, its rival the Samsung Galaxy S3 has shifted 20 million in its first 100 days. Though still an impressive figure, it’s clearly losing out to the overwhelming popularity of the Apple device.
Apple CEO Tim Cook took the opportunity to remark on the colossal success of the iPhone 5 as well as ensure customers of the company’s commitment to delivering a high supply of new model in an effort to meet the overwhelming demand.
"Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,"
"While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."
Currently the iPhone 5 is available in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia, and Apple aren’t stopping there, with the smartphone set for immediate release in a further 22 countries.
Apples shares have jumped 73% since January with share values rising to an incredible $700 leading up to the new smartphones release. While sales will no doubt slow down after the initial launch hype subsides and sales through upgrades from previous iPhones decline, it’s nonetheless a tremendous achievement for the company. The hefty sales figures, coupled with reports that over 100 million iOS devices have upgraded to iOS 6, powerfully reinforces Apples position at the forefront of the smartphone market.

*Writer's Opinion*
Love them or hate them Apples popularity doesn’t appear to be waning anytime soon. Personally there aren’t enough new features on the iPhone 5 for me to consider it a worthwhile purchase for those that already own an iPhone 4s, but anyone looking to jump on the smartphone bandwagon could do a lot worse than the iPhone 5.
Are you one of the 5 million who eagerly rushed out to purchase the new model? Has it lived up to your expectations?
