Battlefield 2143?

Battlefield 2143?

Is there a series of clues that suggest the next step for DICE and Battlefield?

I was doing my standard musings of the latest news on PC Gamer and OPM UK and stumbled across an article whereby the DICE General Manager expressed his thoughts that First Person Shooters will move away from the modern setting and towards the future. This made me think of Battlefield.

Karl Magnus Troedsson believes that there comes a time when a theme will become stale and shooters will move on to a different area. It is possible to see this from the more mainstream titles in the past, we went from World War II being the biggest hit with titles such as Medal of Honour and Call of Duty, even Battlefield had a 1942.

What happened after that was an increasing tendency for FPS games to be set in the ‘modern era’ with the largest example being Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Blackops and even Medal of Honour moved from its beloved World War II into the present day.

What really got my attention with the article on PC Gamer was the link between what fans had already found on Battlefield 3’s Wake Island map and what Karl was saying in this interview. For those of you who don’t already know, a reference to a possible sequel of Battlefield 2142 was made on the Wake Island map of Battlefield 3.

Troedsson notes that FPS games are taking more of a step into the future, which is not news to any of us that have seen the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 information, but what this could mean is that the Easter Egg on Wake Island of Battlefield 2143 could become a reality and may even be the contender for the next Call of Duty.

Being a big fan of the Battlefield 2142 game for the PC this was exciting news for me. The ability for developers to create what they want in a game set in the future is a recipe for a great game. In the future you might find a post on my blog where I dribble with enthusiasm about the next in the Battlefield series.

I won’t go babbling on about how good Battlefield 2142 was and my favourite aspects of it, but I will leave you with a notion. Titan Mode in HD.
