Edna & Harvey : The Breakout

Point and click adventure games seem to be coming back in the indie and digital market. Telltale’s The Walking Dead series is doing well for a game based upon what was thought a “dead” genre in gaming. To be fair, the point and click adventure games were still made – just not as good as some classics like the Monkey Island series (or hard to comprehend, such as Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit). Another comical, yet possible confusing game is coming soon. Edna & Harvey: The Breakout, promises to redefine the genre as “point and touch” adventure when it becomes available on the iPad later this year.

In Edna & Harvey: The Breakout you play as Edna, who wakes up in an insane asylum with no memory. Ignoring the in medias res cliché with the amnesia plot, the game quickly gives the goal to the player with Edna wanting to get out as fast as possible from the asylum, since she feels like she is perfectly sane. Her talking stuffed bunny, Harvey, agrees with her goal and helps out, presumably by giving advice on puzzles. In the game you will meet eccentric characters like Pseudo-Siamese twins and the head of the asylum, Dr. Marcel. Edna & Harvey: The Breakout guarantee’s 20 hours full of twisted humor, where you will meet bizarre characters and engage in crazy dialogs with them. Achievements, German and English voiceovers, plus Facebook integration are also promised. All this will be displayed through the aesthetics of its unique comic style – being completely hand-drawn and rendered in 2D.

Edna & Harvey: The Breakout looks to be a return to classic 2D point and click adventure games, judging by the Trailer. It was a surprise hit in 2008, and won the 2009 Red Dot Design Award, among others, with an earlier version of the game. Edna & Harvey: The Breakout will be available on the iPad in the App Store at the beginning of August 2012.
