Heroes of Newerth, S2 Games’ widely successful free-to-play MOBA, has received a new update that the company says focuses on “new player experience”.
Patch 3.0, which is now downloadable on PC, Mac, and Linux, brings numerous changes that make the game more accessible than ever with a revamped walkthrough to better prepare newcomers for the world of Newerth. Another new addition is the in-game “Learnatorium” which will allow players to watch an all-new series of instructional videos covering everything from the basics of gameplay to advanced techniques. To help newbies even further, the new patch brings AI controlled bots into the mix. Players can create their own customizable bots to either practice against on one of three difficulty settings, or they can be modded to fight against other user-created bots.
The patch also changes Heroes of Newerth graphically, as many characters have received high-definition updates and the standard 5 versus 5 map, Forests of Caldavar, has been completely retextured. Heroes of Newerth veterans shouldn’t worry though, as these changes are purely cosmetic. The map’s layout is still the same but is more detailed and has new textures and designs for buildings and towers. The enhancements also include an improved user interface complete with enhanced in-game chat, and a new options menu.
S2 has topped off their update with revisions and additions to the social aspects of Heroes of Newerth. The improved Referral Program helps players recruit new friends or reach out to former players to return to Newerth. Now there are even incentives to recruit new players, like a trip to the Heroes of Newerth Tour Grand Finals in Las Vegas. Also, if players refer a new player, both people will have three weeks to earn double rewards. Finally, the new Report-a-Player system will allow community members to police unwanted and inappropriate behavior.

*Writer’s Opinion*
While I’ve never played Heroes of Newerth, I am a fan of the MOBA genre. This patch seems to be offering a wide variety of changes that sound like great game elements. Also, I love that they created something called a “Learnatorium”. What changes are you HoN players looking forward to most? Are there any League of Legends or DOTA 2 players out there who are thinking about giving this game a shot? Leave your comments!
