Killzone Mercenary news including a release date. Plus, the Killzone developers challenge Rockstar.
Some rather exciting news for the PlayStation Vita and Killzone fans. The PlayStation exclusive, Killzone: Mercenary, has been quiet for the longest time, but quiet no longer. We have the full blown news story on Killzone: Mercenary. First thing is first, the release date for Killzone Mercenary is September 17th. September 17th is in North America, and in Europe it’s September 18th. Guerrilla Games producer, Poria Torkan, had this to say:
“Killzone: Mercenary is a new first-person shooter in the Killzone series, developed specifically for the PlayStation Vita platform and powered by the stunning Killzone engine,” Torkan explained. “Starting just after the ending of the original Killzone, and revisiting many of the events from the Killzone trilogy, the game puts players in the rugged combat boots of a mercenary named Arran Danner. Danner is a former UCA-soldier who has no qualms about taking on paid contracts from the ISA as well as the Helghast.”
The most impressive thing is when he says “powered by the stunning Killzone engine.” He’s talking about the Killzone 3 engine being in Killzone: Mercenary. Which really goes to show just how amazing that PlayStation is. There was more news mentioned as well, such as: There will be 9 single player missions, each about an hour long, everything revolves around money. Every action you will be rewarded with money, headshots, melee kills, etc. the harder, the more skillful that action is, the more you get paid. Speaking of melee, using the melee swipes requires using the Vita’s touch controls. Last, but not least, is a full multiplayer mode. There will be six multiplayer maps, supporting eight players, and three different game types.
After Killzone: Mercenary announced their release date. Rockstar also announced a release date for its highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V. Which, funny enough, just so happened to land on September 17th as well. On the Killzone twitter feed they had this to say:
That is hilarious. A nice playful jab at Rockstar, but I gotta think that Sony will move Killzone: Mercenary up a week just to avoid going head to head with Grand Theft Auto V. I don’t think that’ll matter too much, but still, no game wants to go up against an established franchise like Grand Theft Auto.
Regarding the news of Killzone: Mercenary though, I’m personally pumped up for it. Killzone: Mercenary looks really good and it’s being developed by a well regarded studio in Guerrilla Cambridge. This really has the potential to be a system seller. We’ll see what happens, but what do you, the reader, think? Are you excited for Killzone: Mercenary? If you have a Vita, will you buy Killzone: Mercenary? If you don’t have a Vita, is this the game that will make you but a Vita? Whatever the case may’be, leave your comments below.
