Lost Planet 3 Trailer Puts You in Giant Mech

As Blue Collar Jim, you must fight off the insect-like horde of Acrid and solve the mysteries hidden inside Lost Planet 3.

Sometimes I think it’s not the guns we’re looking to shoot in shooter games. Oh sure there are a lot of great guns to fire off in great shooter games: Firing a grenade launcher into a horde of zombies (or into your friends by ‘accident’) in a Left 4 Dead game; or even clearing out a legion of Hell Prince Demons with a BFG 9000 in DOOM II. But sometimes I think gamers are looking to just pilot various vehicles in their shooters, which admittedly, is a fun part of the genre. And that feature alone is what seems to make the trailer for Lost Planet 3 stand out.

Lost Planet 3 will start with players taking the role as Jim, a rig pilot that is meant to mine the precious Thermal Energy residing E.D.N. III. Working with Neo-Venus Construction, Jim gets word that there is a large source of thermal energy in treacherous environment on the planet, so he heads out with his rig to claim the energy. Along the way he encounters giant Acrid creatures – the insect-like race native to the planet which also have thermal energy nestled in them. But with his rig, Jim can fight off the Acrid using mechanical arms, machine guns, or get into a little grapple match with the bigger ones.

I’ll have to admit that my first thought when looking at this trailer is Capcom, developers of Lost Planet 3, were taking lessons from EA based upon their trailer for Dead Space 3. Maybe it’s too early to tell though. We do get to see some gameplay footage using Jim’s rig to solve puzzles like getting over gaps and fighting against some big bugs. But there also seems to be cover-based mechanics, and an atmosphere that seems suspiciously close to the USG Ishimura.

Lost Planet 3 is scheduled for release early 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
