Bioware certainly have stirred heads with their fans for quite a while, this year especially with their huge controversial Mass Effect 3 ending ordeal. Since then, it seems they’ve been trying to make amends by providing free content, until now their latest and paid Leviathan DLC.
The Leviathan mainly involves a story related drive involving the history of the reapers, and the involvement of the mysterious creature. It’s easy to reference the Leviathan DLC to Mass Effect 2’s DLC, The Shadow Broker with several different scenarios to play through. First you’re solving a detective case, followed by some galaxy exploration, with action and combat in-between both.
It’s easy to notice that a good amount of effort was poured into the story development here with heartfelt scenes and genuine moments. One moment you’re feeling terrified by the creepy environment that surrounds you. Next you’re thrown into sudden intensity from some intimidating battles, while feeling connected to certain characters you meet on the way.
The design is top notch in most locations you travel, particularly when you’re underwater near the end. The surrounding ocean is stunning to look at, it’s a shame it doesn’t last too long. The level design particularly in battle situations are well made, putting you in rather small areas yet giving you enough space to give you a good challenge.
I have to add that the Leviathan DLC would’ve been a great addition to the main game either already in the game, or a day 1 DLC instead of six months now later. If you’ve already completed the main game, going back to play this DLC while still fun, would’ve provided a far more interesting experience in the story if you were currently playing Mass Effect 3 for the first time. It adds a slightly extended cutscene when you complete the main game if you finish the Leviathan DLC so be sure to check it out.
This two to three hour package is high quality in its contents, which is a good debate to argue the reasonably high price (800 Points on XBOX or $10 on PSN) to purchase this add-on. If you’re a hardcore Mass Effect fan and need to get every bit of history from its mysterious galaxy, it’s a worth while purchase, if not maybe wait for a price drop.
