Microsoft has announced its quarterly revenue ending December 31st 2012. They made a total of $21.46 billion, with 76-cents-a-share. Wall Street estimated a revenue of 77-cents-a-share at 21.53 billion, so quite a bit out if you look carefully at how much a billion actually equates to…
Still, it still earned $6.38 billion dollars which isn’t anything to be crying over, even with its not so successful Windows 8 launch as previously reported.
The Windows Division of Microsoft still posted a strong growth even with Windows 8, up 24% from the year-ago quarter, at $5.88 billion dollars, so they can’t be doing all that bad surely?
CEO Steve Ballmer said:
Our big, bold ambition to reimagine Windows as well as launch Surface and Windows Phone 8 has sparked growing enthusiasm with our customers and unprecedented opportunity and creativity with our partners and developers. With new Windows devices, including Surface Pro, and the new Office on the horizon, we’ll continue to drive excitement for the Windows ecosystem and deliver our software through devices and services people love and businesses need.
This is after reports that Microsoft Windows 8 wasn’t as successful as it could have been due to PC/Laptop makers not building computers to the spec intended for the best performance.
Still, there is a chance for massive growth in the next few months with the release of the Surface Pro tablets, which are different to anything we have seen before, capable of running standard Windows software, with tablet software integration.
The Microsoft Xbox Division saw weaker sales than expected however over the holidays, posting an 11% drop from the prior recordings, with a revenue of $3.77 billion dollars. I think this is to be expected though, since you would think whoever was going to buy an Xbox 360 probably would have done so by now. With the next Xbox expected this year, with a possible announcement at E3 (heres hoping), people may indeed be waiting for that. It certainly makes more sense, with less than a year to go before release.
