Return to 16-bit for Lightning Returns: FFXIII in latest trailer

Square Enix release a retrospective bringing telling the story of Final Fantasy XIII so far

In preparation for the much-anticipated launch of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII this February, Square Enix has offered a new trailer recapping Lightning’s saga so far.

Final Fantasy XIII has offered such a detailed mythology and story that it’s had to be split over three games, with Lightning playing a dominant role all the way through. To help fans keep up with what’s gone on, Square Enix have released a stunning 16-bit trailer telling the story of the past two games. It’ll help players of the last two games to catch up with the story, and it’ll let players joining with Lightning Returns to fully appreciate Lightning’s journey and the conclusion of the epic trilogy.

It’s one of the most memorable trailers of the past few years, and fans who weren’t particularly looking forward to the newest game in the franchise will likely feel completely different after this trailer.

Released in Japan in November last year, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII finally makes an appearance on American and European current-generation consoles this February. Scoring 37/40 in acclaimed Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, the game puts players solely in control of iconic Final Fantasy XIII figurehead, Lightning, in an open world setting littered with enemies, conversations and quests.

The game also adds a new timer mechanic, limiting the amount of time that players can spend exploring to a maximum of 312 in-game hours or 13 in-game days, with one hour of real time equating to one day of gameplay. This adds a new sense of urgency to the game, though the inclusion of a New Game+ option means that players can retry the experience with all their previous equipment.

The stunning conclusion to the Final Fantasy XIII saga, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will launch on Xbox 360 and PS3 on February 11th 2014 in America and February 14th in Europe.
