SEGA® surprised everyone when they announced the re-release of arguably their most popular Sonic game Sonic Adventure 2. During the Sonic Boom meeting at the San Diego Comic-con, SEGA® officially revealed that they will be releasing a remake of Sonic Adventure 2 in HD for both the Playstation Network and Xbox Live.
Sonic Adventure 2 is a continuation of Sonic Adventure. Released in June of 2001 in Europe, North America, and Japan; it marked the 10 year anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Just like its predecessor Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 takes place in a three-dimensional world as opposed to the original two-dimensional side-scroller. It retained the high-speed action that the Sonic franchise is known for and added new content that would eventually carry over to future installments to the Sonic series.
Shadow, Sonic’s arch rival and dark counterpart, made his debut in Sonic Adventure 2 alongside the jewel thief Rouge the bat. Since then, these two characters have been featured in multiple Sonic games, playing vital roles in the in game story and development of the series. Sonic Adventure 2 is also one of few games to feature Dr. Eggman as a playable character.
Single player mode tells the story from two different points of views. Hero missions consist of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails; while Dark missions focus on Shadow, Rouge, and Dr. Eggman. Each hero character plays similarly to their corresponding dark counterpart. Sonic and Shadow’s stages are high-speed action stages, tasking the player to make it to the end of the level. Tails and Eggman play similarly to E-102 Gamma in the first Sonic Adventure, focusing more on running and gunning enemies. Knuckles and Rouge require players to find shards of the Master Emerald, and in some cases, the keys to fortresses. Once the player completes the stories for both the hero and dark characters, a secret mission is unlocked, revealing the true ending.
Unlike the first Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 also has a two-player mode. Much like the single-player story, players compete against each other in races, mech-fights, and treasure hunts. There is also a Kart mini-game when the player completes the Kart games in the single player story for both the hero and dark sides.
