Sony Online Entertainment have kicked off their PAX Prime PlanetSide 2 presence by lifting the games consumer NDA. This will allow show attendees and beta testers to share, live stream and openly discuss their experience battling thousands of other players in the war for Auaraxis.
PlanetSide 2 is an upcoming MMO FPS video game published by Sony Online Entertainment. The game is the sequel to PlanetSide, the MMO shooter originally released in 2003. Planetside 2 promises to improve on successful features from the first game and offer a ‘truly competitive and visceral first person shooter experience.’
In PlanetSide 2, players will have the choice to customize their soldier, weaponries and vehicles to match their play-style, as well as the needs of their team, outfit or empire. Game battles in PlanetSide 2 may last for days or weeks and players should prepare to build coalitions and specialised combat outfits to take on longer term strategic and tactical initiatives.
Sony Online Entertainment started external beta testing for PlanetSide 2 on August 3rd. In the short amount of time that the beta has been available, Sony have reported a huge amount of participation. Beta testers for the MMO first-person shooter Planetside 2’s closed beta have averaged about two hours a day game play.
According to Sony, 535 million shots have been fired in the game and roughly 194.6 million shots hit their target. 6.3 million players were killed during the beta and a whopping 8.5 billion points of damage has been done to players.
Sony Online Entertainment also broke down players’ Empire allegiance. The majority of players, 34.67% of players, went with the Terran Republic, 32.96% backed the New Conglomerate and 32.37% pledged their allegiance to the Vanu Sovereignty.
Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley reminded fans that this NDA didn’t mean that PlanetSide 2 is ready for release. He posted on twitter:
“Beta has a long way to go folks,”
PlanetSide 2 is currently in external beta testing and will be available as a Free-To-Play.Your Way. game for PC systems via digital download later this year. Optional additional content will be available for purchase in the games marketplace.
Players at PAX this weekend can see PlanetSide 2 at booth #3317. Sony have promised that there will be plenty of demo stations on hand, and Sony are planning to participate in several panels and daily livestream casts.
