The Return of NIGHTS
Nowadays SEGA is mostly recognized for its blue hedgehog mascot, running through colorful worlds and sometimes slipping into confusing, Final Fantasy-like settings with some games released on the current console.
Sonic is an old IP to SEGA, but back when SEGA was still making consoles to compete against Nintendo, they released other memorable characters, such as ones that rode on dragons and breath out lasers or another character that flew through a beautiful 3D world Superman style. One such console under SEGA’s name was the SEGA Saturn, and 16 years from this date, they released NIGHTS into dreams…, a flying platformer praised as being the best game in SEGA’s history. Now Nights is getting an HD remake, and being released on console and PC digital platforms.
Nights has stood out as one of the most recognizable titles in the SEGA library for most fans. “We’ve gotten a lot of requests about this game over the years, and are very happy to be able to give both former Saturn owners and new players a chance to play it in its most beautiful form to date this fall,” said Chris Olson, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA. There is already a trailer showing off the HD version of Nights to check out
The 3D platformer will be coming to the Xbox LIVE Arcade, Playstation Network, and Steam. The HD remake of Nights will improve the aspect ratio to 16:9. Nights will also support leaderboards, trophies, and achievements. SEGA also wants to preserve the original game by providing the SEGA Saturn version for free, as an optional feature.
I never had a SEGA Saturn so I missed the opportunity to try out Nights. But I imagine if anyone is interested in playing a classic 3D platformer that wasn’t Mario 64 for research, then this game might be worth picking up. If anything, this game also shows a variety of color and has an emphasis on flying compared to most modern games.
