Theatrhythm Final Fantasy launch trailer

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, is being developed by indieszero and is being published by Square Enix exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.

This time last year if you would have told me that there was going to be a Final Fantasy music based game, I would have laughed at you and your ridiculous statement. Turns out there is actually a Final Fantasy music based game called Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

The game has a simple concept, similar to Guitar Hero. As the line approaches a circle you must tap it at the right moment to gain points and to play a new note within a song. Whilst you are doing these actions you are sometimes treated to stunning visual cutscenes in the background, or you see your character progressing further into the story.

The game follows the events of the gods Chaos and Cosmos, a similar plot to Dissidia Final Fantasy for the PlayStation Portable. The space between the two is called Rhythm, which gives birth to a crystal that controls music. Chaos causes the crystal to not be it’s normal self, and the only way to return it to normal is to increase a music wave known as “Rhythpo” (known as “Rhythmia” in the English release). As such, various characters from the Final Fantasy universe are brought together in order to harness the power of Rhythpo and use it for the greater good . Hopefully we will see some characters such as Cloud in this one because let’s face it, that would just be cool.

Players take control of four Final Fantasy characters, and select a Final Fantasy game from the first Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy XIII, which is like 13 games in one, kinda. Each game has three stages that make up field, battle, and event stages that you can play through. Each stage features different game mechanics than the others and once a stage is completed, the characters level up in true Final Fantasy style.

The difficulty level can be changed in order to make it appealing to people with a passion for a beat or for those who cannot seem to find the rhythm. Throughout the game, players can unlock music and movie scenes from the Final Fantasy universe but must complete stages successfully. There’s always a catch.

Players also have the option to purchase additional levels through the Nintendo eShop so the experience could go on for hours. Revisiting many key moments from the Final Fantasy universe does sound massively appealing though, so Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is a most welcome addition to the the Final Fantasy series.

The game was released in Japan on February 16, 2012, in North America on July 3, 2012 and will be released in Europe on July 6, 2012.
