UK Gamers Win Call of Duty 4 Tournament

Two gamers from the UK won a £10,000 prize in a GameShadows Battle Tournament. The tournament gave players around the world the chance to compete in either Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Counter-Strike: Source Challenge. The tournament lasted for about two and a half months as players battled (and hopefully took breaks for food, drink, time for loved ones, etc.) to win a lot of money. What can you do with £10,000? Well, it turns out to be about $15,000 (I’m American and I use the currency of truth, justice, and the tears of eagles) so I would like to go on a video game spending spree. Sadly, it’s still summer so there’s not much to buy with my freedom dollars. Only three more months until games actually start getting good. Who’s up for building more stuff in Minecraft XBLA? Absolutely no one because you can’t use the cool mods and the updates come out too slowly.

Sorry, back to tournament news! The winning group was called “Western Wolves” which is surprisingly classy for Call of Duty. A member of the winning team, Thomas ‘cHoObiE’ Mead, said, “It was a fantastic cup to participate in. I am glad that my team came out the victors despite a few hiccups along the way.” I’m glad to see that there are COD players out there who are well spoken and polite, although it stinks that they’re all over in Europe. Also, I’m glad his name wasn’t something ridiculous like “URM0M” or “1M2SEXY” or “B00BSRGR8T”, although I do think I’ve hit on why esports haven’t really taken off outside of South Korea. No commentator wants to talk about the great strategy used by B00BSRGR8T to defeat the D!CK clan.

In the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare tournament Team Phantasmagoria took second place and LowLandLions took third. In the Counter-Strike: Source Challenge Tournament, French team Team VeryGames took first, while Mousesports and EYES ON U took second and third.
