The reviews are in for Apple’s newest gadget, the iPad Mini, and display experts say when compared to that of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD, its display is ranked last on the list.
DisplayMate Technologies, Raymond Soneira is calling the mini iPad “capable” but not great. Check out more on his in depth look by clicking here. When put up against other popular tablets on todays markets, like the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. it comes in last for highest resolution display. Soneira goes on to say that even the mini Tablets put out by Google and Amazon rank higher than the iPad mini.
Even compared to that of other famous Apple products it takes last for its Retina display. The 9.7-inch iPads, iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5, and Retina MacBooks all successfully outrank the newest arsenal to the Apple family. “So Apple, the inventor of Retina Display marketing, now has a significant comparative shortfall on this,” wrote Soneira.
Below are a few specs on the brand new iPad mini.
- Pixel resolution: iPad Mini has a 1,024×768 resolution with a pixel density of 163 pixels per inch (ppi). “That’s now considered to be rather on the low side.” The Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD are both rated at 216 ppi.
- Screen reflectance: On the iPad Mini, screen reflectance “is a surprisingly high” 9 percent. On the Nexus 7 the reflectance is a much lower 5.9 percent, while on the Kindle Fire HD it is 6.4 percent. “As a result, the iPad mini reflects 53 percent more ambient light than the Nexus 7 and 41 percent more than the Kindle Fire HD.”
- Color gamut: The iPad Mini has an “antiquated” small 62 percent Color Gamut. The Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7 both deliver a much larger 86 percent color gamut. And the iPad Mini compares even more unfavorably with iPad 3 and iPhone 5, which have full 100 percent standard Color gamuts.
With the bad always comes some good though and it is no different with the iPad mini. Displaymate does give the display a “good” and “very good”. When put against the Kindle Fire HD the ratings for both are “very good”. With the Nexus 7 receiving just a “good”, due to pictures and videos having “washed out color and contrast”.
