Does anyone remember 2009 when a trailer for an adorable and heartbreaking game that everyone really wanted to play debuted at E3? There was a cat/dog/bird creature and a little boy, and it was called The Last Guardian. Here’s the trailer to refresh your memory. Well, it looks like it is being delayed.
I should say it looks like it is being delayed again. According to Jeux Video, via VideoGamer.com, the president of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, would not set a release date because, “…last time we talked about a date for the Last Guardian we finally disappointed many people.” Although it is true that people don’t remember delays as long as the game is great, they will remember if it is never ever made. Don’t we all wish that those Duke Nukem delays put that awful, awful game to rest. That game was just bad. It should be studied in universities in courses on bad things, maybe Introduction to Bad Video Games or Why the World is Terrible 101.
The Last Guardian has been have poor luck of late, since the creator of the game, Fumito Ueda, has left Sony but is planning on helping to finish out the game. Ueda is known for his work on Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, two games that are loved by the gaming community for their touching stories and memorable characters. I believe they’re also two of the three games that gamers cite when they talk about how gaming is a meaningful form of art. I believe the third is Viva Pinata. That whole Romance Dance thing they do in that game is really touching, and is definitely a commentary on the role of postmodernism and the fragmented media landscape on modern society. Or it could be about pinatas making babies. Either one works.
