Final Fantasy XIV Trailer Shows New Series Direction

Square Enix showed a new trailer for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which promises that “…every end marks a new beginning.” That sounds ominous. In typical Square Enix style, the trailer for the game is very very pretty. It’s also quite long, to the point that I feel like I played the entire game.

One of these days, someone is going to spend their entire budget on a trailer for their game. It will cost millions and it will be the best trailer gamers have ever seen, to the point that they won’t feel scammed when they spend 60 bucks on the new title only to find it has a board game inside with handwritten instructions. I believe I’ve created a great future for the industry. We’ll call it “tabletop gaming.”

The trailer for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn shows a massive battle, some magic, a lady with a cool bow, and a dragon. I mean, it isn’t fantasy if there isn’t a dragon ravaging the countryside. Dragons and fantasy are like eggs and bacon, dogs and fleas, America and handguns. However, if you ask me, the trailer is a bit unfair to dragons.

I don’t believe they all want to destroy things and set them on fire. What about Falkor or Spike? Those are the only nonviolent dragons I can think of. I need more time. The trailer also has a Bonnie Tyler soundalike doing music, because nothing says epic fantasy action like sad sounding 80’s music. Those electric drums really capture the sounds of bygone eras, whether they be the times of dragons or the times of the Cold War.
