Crystal Dymanic’s reboot of Tomb Raider series today launched on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC with an accompanying trailer.
The game is intended to build on the character of Lara Croft, who previously was known largely for her bra size and not much else. Players will need to rely on nothing more than instinct and the durability of the human body as they quest to uncover the dark history of the island they find themselves on. Written by Rhianna Pratchett and John Stafford with music by Jason Graves, the reboot is intended to explore the transformation of Lara from an untested woman to the resilient adventurer that gamers are familiar with. The Head of Studio for Crystal Dynamics, Darrell Gallagher commented that he believes in the story built around the character, remaining hopeful that the game will endure as a “well deserving renaissance for Lara Croft.”
Darrell went on to say that the new Tomb Raider was something that he felt was “truly special,” with a large amount of care, passion and dedication from all those involved with the project. He stated that Crystal Dynamics is made up of “talented people who have put their hearts into making [Tomb Raider]” and undergone a journey as the game went through production. Darrell’s glowing sentiments are not unfounded it would appear, with many sites giving the game positive reviews.
In addition to the game itself, an array of companion material has launched with Tomb Raider. An art book titled Tomb Raider: The Art of Survival has been released, while an app called Tomb Raider: The Final Hours has launched on both iOS and Android to give fans access to never before seen concept art as well as documentation regarding the game’s development. Rhianna Pratchett has also created a Dark Horse Comic entitled Tomb Raider: The Beginning to tie in with the game. The publishers of Tomb Raider have also released both an official soundtrack and Tomb Raider themed clothing for those hungry for more game related content.
