Alien Rage E3 gameplay footage dissected

Current gen consoles can still make impressive looking games as Alien Rage proves

Alien Rage is an upcoming Science Fiction First Person Shooter, that is coming to us from City Interactive – who you may remember because they developed the Sniper: Ghost Warrior as well as the Terrorist Takedown series.

Alien Rage is supposed to be a mix of the best classic First Person Shooter games; but from what I have seen in the Alien Rage E3 gameplay footage the only game in that mix so far is Gears of War with a touch of Bulletstorm.

While the latest footage does not show them using cover much, you do not appear to have much health so it looks like you are going to have to get acquainted with the walls.

Okay so calling it a Gears of War clone is a little harsh because the gameplay shown is too fast pace for Gears of War but it definitely has the games colour scheme. The graphics however are extremely impressive especially when you consider that the game is so far anyway scheduled for release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC for digital download.

Alien Rage will apparently have a wide selection of weapons for you to play with but shown so far anyway are two assault rifles, one of them being the heavy version most likely and a pistol. Oh and the guns will have multiple firing modes as well but they haven’t been shown yet.

The reason I brought up Bulletstorm earlier on is because City Interactive want this game to be a truly hardcore arcade First Person Shooter so there is a scoring mechanic and you will get extra points for killing enemies in certain ways like the skill shots for Bulletstorm. So far there have not been many shown so far with the only ones in the trailer being for headshots and blowing things ups.

The demo may just be showing the games score attack mode but I cannot help but wonder if the points will be for anything else. If they are going to be using the points, hopefully they will do more with them then just for buying ammo and maybe for getting upgrades as well.

Why are ships in the future always using the same bland grey colour scheme.

Finally, there are the enemies that you will be taking on. Alien Rage will have 21 different types of enemies to take on as well as 8 “badass” boss fights as well. The trailer shows what appears to be the basic grunts as well as a type that can turn invisible and appear to have the ability to shock you which will leave you vulnerable.

So that is Alien Rage and so far while it is a great looking game in terms of the graphics besides that at the moment it’s just a little too boring. The games colour scheme of boring grey appears to just be the industry standard for most shooters nowadays but the guns do at least sound decent even if the enemies do not have many reactions to getting shot.

To be fair Alien Rage has not been given a release date yet so it is still a work in progress. With a few more skill shots and weapons, this could be a fun arcade shooter! What are your thoughts on this game, would you consider buying it once a release date has been decided?
