Yet another new gameplay demo to come out of Gamescom 2012, as Capcom proudly takes the stage to give us all a glimpse of the icy combat we can expect from Lost Planet 3. Producer Andrew Szymanski takes the narrative for the screening, and series visionary Kenji Oguro assumes the role of the player. Capcom explained that this is the third game in the series, but the first one in chronological order, making it a prequel to the 2007 original title.

They kick off the show with a quick trailer/mash up of brand new gameplay, starting with a view of the Earth from space, as all of the city lights slowly diminish and eventually disappear. This sets the mood that Earth is in big trouble, and its up to our protagonist “Jim Peyton” to uncover the mystery on the frozen planes of E.D.N. III, in hopes to bring new-found resources back to our dying planet. Jim is living and working on E.D.N. III to send money back to his wife and daughter. More specifically, the only reason he’s enduring the winterland is to take on these “contract” mining jobs. Similar to working on some sort of Arctic oil rig here on Earth, the job pays extremely well, and he’s doing his part for humanity by actively working to find these new resources. Not surprisingly, that’s when things start to go wrong.
The gameplay now switches over to the classic third-person Lost Planet view, with Jim Peyton at the battle-ready. Something has gone wrong with the planets only communication relay atop a tall mountain, and naturally Jim is the only one who can fix it. It’s up to the player to now venture through the nest of the insect like Akrid, while slowly ascending the rocky peaks to the destination. This is where we get to see some of the new combat mechanics that Capcom has put into the game. A cover system is the biggest addition, allowing the player to assume a very Gears Of War like stance behind a waist high barrier. After that we get a good look at their new “struggle move,” where a flying Akrid pounces onto the player, and there’s some Dead Space like aiming reticules to attempt to shoot the Akrid off of you before its too late.
At this point the game looks impressive in scope and story, while having enough new content to keep us gamers happy through the single player game. Much is left to be seen however, as the game will not launch until “early 2013”.
