Most experts will agree that Soviet Russia had some of the harshest winters. With temperatures sinking down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit in 1941, it would be difficult to disagree with them. The cold temperatures were brutal, capable of freezing human flesh in a manner of minutes. And those who were not prepared for the ruthless, icy terrain eventually felt deaths cold embrace.
Company of Heroes 2 will take an innovative leap and attempt to simulate the heartless, frozen conditions of Soviet Russia as announced by THQ Inc. By using Relic Entertainment’s Essence Engine 3.0 and ColdTech system, Company of Heroes 2 hopes to capture the authenticity of arctic warfare as never before seen in any strategy game.
The new ColdTech system feature an ‘extreme cold’ mechanic which imitates the problems and obstacles encountered in a snow-filled environment. As depicted in Company of Heroes 2, players can potentially die from the cold if they don’t do what is necessary to stay warm. Building fires and taking shelter within buildings become essential to survival. Random blizzards make the harsh temperatures even more extreme, making it even more dangerous to stand out in the open.
The ColdTech system also works together with the Essence Engine to turn frigid ice into a weapon in the competent player’s hands. Not only does the snow hamper and impact movement in the game, but it can also be melted and destroyed. Collapsing the ice under enemy troops can result in plunging them into a frozen, watery grave.
“Company of Heroes 2 is all about authenticity and no game based on the Eastern Front would be complete without extreme weather conditions. Thanks to the enhanced technology offered by the new Essence Engine we are able to accurately portray the bitter Soviet winter which crippled the German army,” says Quinn Duffy, the Game Director at Relic Entertainment.
With these new features with other improvements, Company of Heroes® 2 will be a proud addition to the franchise.
