Do last minute release dates work? The iphone 5 has been a bigger hit than already suspected. Its preorder capacity has already hit new records with 2 million preorders in 1 hour. The new Nintendo console set for release this November, the ‘Wii U’ has also taken huge preorder numbers.
Both Nintendo & Apple recently have had public press releases regarding details of their respected devices, with the most important piece of information – the release date – along with the availability of preordering, ready to go.
There is a marketing strategy for this kind of promoting; it’s called Last Minute Marketing. Both companies are well aware of their products' hype & awareness beforehand. They’ve already spread rumours regarding the existence of their respected devices, which gives consumers the heads-up to stay tuned and get hyped because it tells them to anticipate the announcement of when they’ll be released to the public.
The fans who have been following the iphone 5 and Wii U already know more than the average consumer, so when both companies make their major press releases to embark their new devices, they let a bigger audience – basically the whole world – know of their existence, along with details such as: the availability of preordering, the price and what versions they’ll be releasing.
I ask you, the reader, do you agree with how Apple officially announced the Iphone 5 only recently and now it’s set for release already, this week? It’s such a small amount of time that the anticipation is very short; is that a good or bad thing? I believe for perhaps the biggest and most popular next generation device, the iphone 5 doesn’t need much anticipation draw out because it already has so much popularity. Apple already has a massive following from their long history of popular products: Mac Systems, iPads, iPods, iTunes & previous iPhones have all been massively popular to consumers.
As for the Nintendo Wii U, the system is set for release in two months time, along with several launch titles. Nintendo has been around a long time as well, and is probably the biggest name in video gaming, therefore they also don’t need a huge anticipation length to gain popularity with their new product. Also, like Apple, they have a long history of popular products with their current console, the Nintendo Wii, which has sold over 100 million systems. Was it a good idea to officially announce their new system so soon to launch? Are you looking forward to the new Wii U?
Commercial advertising and marketing will be the forefront of both companies’ minds now. They’ve revealed their latest devices, gained the popularity from the consumers, now they’ll continue to respond to consumer demand and push sales while the news is fresh and in people’s minds. You can call it ‘The anticipation period.’ Let it begin!
