Eurogamer Impressions: God of War Ascension

I was introduced to God of War a little later than most people, as God of War 2 was the first game i had encountered and throughout the game i was amazed at the storyline and what you could do to enemies with just a simple grapple. 5 years later and once again the series ups its game as i am utterly amazed at how Kratos eliminates his foes with the hands on time i had with God of War Ascension.

When it comes to the story of the game, i am not too clear as to what path it will take as the demo is only there so the developers can show off what they have added to Ascension, however i do know that the game is set 6 months after Kratos murdered his wife and child. The main objective is for Kratos to break the bond with Ares. In order to do such a thing he must defeat the three furies, which is slightly ironic as Kratos is definitely the most furious video game character to ever walk the virtual earth.

Anyway, God of War Ascension plays almost identically to the original trilogy of games. This is mostly due to Santa Monica developing the game, but also because there is nothing wrong with the gameplay of the series so it most certainly doesn't need to change. Of the section i played i was able to completely destroy some smaller enemies with objects that can be picked up, such as spears and swords. Let me tell you, there isn't a more satisfying feeling than finishing your opponent with a spear throw, you feel powerful. Which moves me onto my next point. God of War Ascension makes you feel like a powerful God, with the available combos and grapples, i was able to string together powerful moves to finish a group of enemies with style, which made me feel pretty cool.

The game still contains the puzzle elements that are expected to be included within a God of War game, however the girl who played before me seemed to have a lot of difficulty overcoming the only puzzle within the demo. I'm actually glad she had trouble as i would have had no clue what to do and ended up looking awful at the game, so thank you mysterious lady!

Most importantly God of War Ascension includes an awful lot of gore and in one section of the demo, there was a particular scene at the end that made my actually say 'wow man that's cool', it was actually so cool and unexpected, but i won't ruin the surprise for you. Even against regular enemies, Kratos finds the most painful way to finish off enemies, which is why we have all come to love the baddest baldy in Greece.

God of War Ascension will be released exclusively on the Playstation 3 in March 2013
