Tomb Raider Origins Explored

Crystal Dynamics have released the second in the series of the-behind-the-scenes documentaries entitled “The Final Hours of Tomb Raider: Origins of a Story”.  Zachary Levi is at Nerd HQ in San Diego during Comicon to examine the world of Tomb Raider.

The episode examines the exploration of character development and narrative within the game. This episode features Lead Writer Rhianna Pratchett, Narrative Designer John Stafford, and Creative Director Noah Hughes.   All three explain the massive responsibility of reimagining one of gaming’s biggest franchises, Tomb Raider.

Lead writer Rhianna Pratchett tells how she feels her real-life experiences helped her develop the character to make Croft come to life. She explains:

“There is some of me in her absolutely.  Lara is very bookish and in her own head”…“Like Lara, I went to public school.  I actually learned archery, and I actually studied Egyptology."

This instalment of Tomb Raider Origins features previously unseen clips in which we see the writers opening up about creating a realistic character in Lara. They also explain how they successfully merge gameplay and the narrative. Camilla Luddington, Tomb Raiders the voice of the games leading lady discusses how emotional the script made her feel.

New clips from the game show how Lara's backstory has her into the hardened adventurer we are used to. Lara’s first kill is described as being a particularly emotional moment. Another scene shows the younger Lara fall down a mountainside, screaming as she bounces off rocks and trees.

The games developers explain the significance of the characters origins explaining:

“Laras first kill is horrible to watch, however it demonstrates that people can pick themselves up despite their fear.” … “In the game it is shown that you can't have bravery without fear.”

Tomb Raider explores the gritty origins of Lara Croft. The game chronicles her ascent from a frightened young woman into a hardened survivor.  Lara is armed only with her raw instinct, and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance.  In Tomb Raider Lara Croft will fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island, in the attempt to escape its hold.

Tomb Raider is currently set for Release on March 5th 2013.

The game will be released for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
