12 percent of recent break-ups have been caused by the latest addition of FIFA according to research conducted by VoucherCodesPro.co.uk on October 16, 2012. They say one in ten breakups have been impacted by the FIFA 13 in some way.
1,124 newly singled people were polled about the reason for their split with their significant other. The responses uncovered 12 percent of those polled admitted that FIFA 13 played a role in their break-up. Many also admitted to breaking up with them after more than a year together.
Respondents were asked “What was the main factor in your most recent break-up?”, cheating was the most popular response at 36 percent. The relationship running its course was the second highest response.
The respondents were then asked to go into farther detail. 43 percent of those who admitted to FIFA placed the final stake into their relationship by letting the game taking up most of their free time normally spent with their partner. However another 31 percent said it was down to FIFA 13 producing a “change in mood” within the relationship.
Online interaction also seemed to have played a major role in the break-ups. 9 percent said that internet problems created tension, and another 13 percent unswervingly mentioned “transfer deadline day” on FIFA 13 as a major problem as well.
83 percent of those who admitted to FIFA 13 being a major deterrent in their relationships were male. 56 percent claimed they didn’t regret their choice, picking the game over their partner.
George Charles of had the following to say:
“We had 50 Shades of Grey causing problems in relationships during the summer, however, now it seems like FIFA Shades of Grey as another obsession takes over! People see video games as a break up from reality, but it seems that the virtual world can have implication on the real world too.”
He went on to say:
“Video games can get addictive, but it’s important to keep a hold of reality and not let it detract from daily life. Games are meant to be a source of fun not strife. Players need to put them into perspective and take a step back if it gets to much. If a game’s going badly, why not just turn off and start again?”
