Spec Ops: The Line is getting a full on narrative titled FTL: Faster Than Light. The Game Developers Conference hosted in March will feature an entire narrative on shooting and a lecture on teaching students to the audio of gaming.
This is all part of the Independent, GDC Education and new Game Narratie Summits hosted at the Moscone Center in San Francisco Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26. Subset Games’ Justin Ma and Matthew Davis will be there explaining their work on FTL as well as crowdfunding to release, player needs,mechanics, and many more in ‘Designing Without a Pitch – FTLPostmortem.’
Ma and Davis will speak on
“the hows and whys of separating one’s expectations from preconceived notions about games, genres, settings, and other previous experiences when designing.”
2K Games, the wonderful people behind Borderlands 2, will also be featured at the GDC in March. Their lead writer Walk Williams will dive into how the story was designed in Spec Ops The Line in ‘We Are Not Heroes: Contextualizing Violence through Narrative.’ ‘We Are Not Heroes: Contextualizing Violence through Narrative.’ This panel will teach attendees how the game’s narrative design
“led to a more immersive and emotionally impactful experience.”
The Games Institute will also be in attendance at the GDC Education Summit with Canada research chair in Interactive Audio Karen Collins. The graduate from the University of Waterloo will be explaining her own hands on experience for teaching in ‘Biff! Boom! Pow! Introducing Students to Sound for Games.’ ‘Biff! Boom! Pow! “listening, spotting, recording, editing, creative design, mixing, Foley, and more!”
