Gran Turismo 6 announced at Silverstone and it’s coming to the PlayStation 3, Holiday 2013.
Last week, we mentioned about how a new Gran Turismo game might be announced on May 15th during a celebration at Silverstone Racetrack. Now, it’s official, Gran Turismo 6 is real and will be coming to the PlayStation 3 with a release window of ‘Holiday 2013’.
Kazunori Yamauchi, the President of Polyphony Digital, officially announced Gran Turismo 6:
“I’d like to announce today that we are developing GT6 for the holiday season this year on the PlayStation 3. The game engine will be renewed for GT6, we’ll be cleaning it up, making it smoother for the future. The rendering engine will be completely renewed for GT6, there will be a revamped Physics Engine, new suspension, tyre (tire) and aerodynamics modeling. We’ll have 200 more cars than Gran Turismo 5, with 1200 available at release. More cars will be released after launch, too.”
Gran Turismo 6 will feature the cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 5, with new cars and tracks being included, of course, including Silverstone in the UK. In the addition of new cars and tracks GT6 will include a much improved course maker. As Kaz mentioned, an improved engine, and revamped car physics. A Gran Turismo 6 demo is expected to come out in late July, and you can expect more information during E3 and Gamescom.
For Sony, it makes sense to release another Gran Turismo game on a console that has 70+ million users around the world. Gran Turismo is the most lucrative series for Sony having sold around a little less than 70 million copies. The most recent Gran Turismo game, Gran Turismo 5, has sold almost 10 million copies. Sony’s other exclusive games – which are all top of the line games – have struggled to move the needle. Gran Turismo hasn’t had any problems in doing that. Think of it this way, Xbox 360 exclusives outsell PlayStation 3 exclusives by about 10 to 1 (note: not an accurate number, but it just seems that way.) Gran Turismo 5 the Prologue edition, meanwhile, outsold Forza 4. The Gran Turismo franchise is a juggernaut. So, another Gran Turismo game this late in the cycle isn’t really a surprise.
The only thing I’m disappointed in is a lack of a PlayStation Vita game. If Polyphony Digital have been working on Gran Turismo 6 for the past three years, I’d have to think it wouldn’t be too difficult for them to port it to the PlayStation Vita. Which, is basically just a mini, portable, PlayStation 3. That’s the only thing that’s really frustrating to me. The PlayStation Vita is a fantastic system, it just needs some more great games, and Gran Turismo 6 would have fit the bill.
