Guild Wars 2 is now two things: not World of Warcraft, and is the fastest-selling Western MMORPG of all time.
The Guild Wars legend has now gone beyond what developer ArenaNet created when they released the original game back in 2005. The cult MMORPG’s latest instalment, Guild Wars 2, has just been crowned the fastest-selling MMO ever, based on information from strategic market research and consulting firm, DFC Intelligence.
“After triangulating against multiple data sources, it’s clear that Guild Wars 2 is the fastest-selling Western MMO of all time based on the first nine months of availability. This puts Guild Wars 2 in an impressive position when they release in China, where we’ve seen similar franchises really take off.” – David Cole, analyst for DFC Intelligence.
Considering the game has yet to release in the world’s most populated country only amplifies the significance of this new recognition and provides important perspective on the popularity of the genre.
What’s slightly more shocking is that Guild Wars 2 beat out World of War craft for the Western RPG title. This may have more to do with WoW’s steady decline in subscribers than on Guild Wars’ success – but I think it’s fair to say that it’s a little bit of both.
Alongside the news, ArenaNet announced a free trial for Guild Wars 2. The trial will run from 8:00 BST Friday, August 23, to 7:59 BST Monday, August 26. No one knows why the trial end squarely at 8:00.
