Mario and Luigi are amazing, for the past 28 years they have been defeating enemies without complaint, even after constantly searching in the wrong castle or having to deal with being shrunk and eaten by Bowser himself. They are so incredible, I imagine they could probably save the Mushroom Kingdom and worlds nearby, in their sleep. Well this idea was put to the test by Nintendo in Mario And Luigi : Dream Team Bros coming to the 3DS and the 3DS XL on the 12th July.
The fourth instalment of the legendary RPG series begins with Princess Peach, her loyal staff and the famous brothers Mario and Luigi all being invited to go on a trip to investigate, from a tourist perspective, Pi’illo Island and the owner of said island, Dr. Snoozemore. It’s very easy to get a doctorate in video game land. Now it can’t be a game with Mario and Luigi in it if Princess Peach isn’t instantly kidnapped at this point. Nintendo always delightfully predictable organise just that with the help of the new addition to the series, the ghostly bat king Antasma. The tricky part here for the brothers is of course that she has been stolen, not just to another world but a different plane of existence, the Dream World.
Fortunately Luigi’s brain is on the same wavelength as the population of Pi’illo Island, the Pi’illo Folk and this allows Mario to access the Dream World with ease. Alternating between Luigi’s Dream World and the real world, you must solve all kinds of lovely puzzles, battle all kinds of lovely enemies and even interact with the bizarre yet perfectly acceptable creations of Dreamy Luigi’s own imagination to succeed.
The relationship between the real world and Dream World plays a critical role within the game. While in the real world Mario and Luigi can help each other out in true trademark Mario Bros. fashion. In the dream world however it is Dreamy Luigi that helps Mario get closer to saving Princess Peach for the first time in a month or so. FOr example Luiginary Works are magical ways in which you can interact with the Dream World environment through Luigi’s sleeping form. The entire Dream World game can be affected to Mario’s benefit by simply tickling Luigi’s nose or pulling at his moustache hairs on the touch screen at the bottom.
Luigi can also help out in battles within Dream World in completely different ways than he would normally operate in the real world, or previous titles. A horde of Luigis turn up to instill Mario with enough power to perform Luiginary Attacks each of which is designed to make great use of the 3DS and 3DS Xl features in new and original ways. There is one such Luiginary Attack where Mario will find himself atop a ball of Luigis and you would use the motion controls to steer him towards a handful of enemies and knock them down. You will also find the 3D capabilities of the console are critical for players to perform various attacks or dodges in battle with ease.
Fans of the previous games will be happy to hear the return of the traditional RPG level-up system as well as the addition of the Bro Points and badge reward system.
There hasn’t been a bad one yet, this series of games is certainly a strong focus for Nintendo and no-one who enjoys RPGs or Mario games could regret this one coming your way July 12th 2013.
