Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

The next Mario and Sonic Olympics game lands on 8th November.

To celebrate the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, held in Sochi, Russia, a new game in the popular Mario & Sonic Olympic series will be landing on the Wii U this November. The game is aimed at involving all members of the family, from children to grandparents, in Winter Olympic disciplines like Speed Skating and Alpine Skiing. The game also features a few new additions like Figure Skating Pairs, Snowboard Slopestyle and Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom, with Snowboard Slopestyle set to feature in the 2014 Winter Olympics for the first time ever.

The game will feature 16 Olympic events, utilising the Wii U GamePad and Wii Remote Plus controllers to offer intuitive and detailed controls to allow the players to fully control the action. The gameplay also features inventive new ways of using the remotes to play, including two players holding one Wii Remote Plus to perform the Figure Skating Pairs. Similarly, an event like Curling uses the GamePad in intelligent ways, allowing players to plan strategies and examine the situation before releasing the stone with the Wii Remote.

Much like previous Mario & Sonic games, there are also Dream events to go alongside the standard Olympic Events. These are more fantastical, exaggerated versions of classic sports, allowing players to do crazy stunts like move between Skis and Snowboards mid-race, or from bobsleigh to skates, to really mix up the gameplay on offer. There’s also events like huge snowball fights and dramatic, exaggerated ice hockey battles to get stuck in to!

Another feature in the latest game is the Legends Showdown, which allows 20 characters to compete in an ultimate showdown, with the player responsible for selecting the correct strategy and character for each event to ensure that they come out on top. With a Legends trophy on offer, necessitating that the player defeat five event bosses to claim it.

There’s also an all-new party mode called the ‘Action & Answer Tour’, taking the style of a TV quiz program where up to four people can compete in Olympics-based minigames, testing quick reactions and observational skills to earn points and gain as many points as possible. There’s also the option of online multiplayer, competing against players from across the globe for Winter superiority. Winning online matches also contributes to the score of your home nation, with an ongoing scoreboard keeping track of which country is leading the international standings.
