Better a week later than a month right?
Hey I don’t suppose that you remember the trailer for Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeros do you? Well it’s now officially the fifth game in the series and is called “Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain” and in true Hideo Kojima tradition the trailer leaves us with more questions than answers..
Before I write about the trailer itself I want to ask a question. Do you remember all the work you put into Mother Base in Peace Walker? You know how you recruited an entire army and made a name for yourself and your capabilities while they invented some interesting items like soda of all things.

If most of the staff on Mother Base got slaughtered then did Hideo Kojima’s in game character get killed as well?
Well the trailer shows Mother Base getting destroyed. All the troops you spend ages training are slaughtered and even Big Boss barely survives the attack as well as a few of your men like Miller and it’s revealed that you’re unconscious for nine years. Oh and the hospital you’re in gets blown up too so not a great way to start your first day after a nine-year coma.
Okay to be fair the trailer does show the way Mother Base gets destroyed pretty well with the soldiers putting up a desperate struggle against unwinnable odds and Big Boss trying to save others when it’s obvious that doing so is fruitless.
The reason that the game is called The Phantom Pain is because the trailer explains that when Fox was born a counter “Phantom” called XOF which appears to be led by the guy with the burned body shown in the earlier trailer hence the bizarre name.

My guess is that this guy is the person with the burned face that was shown in the Ground Zeros trailer
Speaking of burn victims the trailer shows during the hospital attack scene one of a guy on fire. He is either a patient or the guy who appears later in the trailer riding a flaming horse with flaming wings. “Sigh” remember when this series was sort of down to earth.
This scene shows off that Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain appears to have interactive cut scenes as shown when Big Boss shots him in slow motion. This should be a good way to make the series famously long cut scenes seem more interactive like when you could control the Metal Gear during the briefings in MGS 4.
Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain is scheduled for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 with no release date or even a season for release given yet so it might end up on next-gen consoles and so far is shaping up to be an interesting addition to the series but please Hideo please let there be more gameplay than cut scenes this time unlike MGS4 which at times felt more like an interactive movie.
