I’m a big fan of tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons. I also had a moment where I spent a lot of my money on Magic: The Gathering cards as a kid, at least until I had to drop the hobby due to how expensive it was.
At the time, I enjoyed how simple the rules were for Magic and how fast it was to get a game started. I never saw that with Dungeons and Dragons, which might explain why a session in there lasts four or five hours. Cleaning up a D&D game was also a pain, but that might be in the past now that board games start becoming video games. Micro Studio BitFlip Games intends to give us the miniature, strategic deck-building and exciting boards of a board game, but in the video game Minion Master, coming to PAX this August.
The latest version of Minion Master will be unveiled at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle, WA from August 31st to September 2nd. Minion Master will combine elements of tabletop gaming, turn-based and real-time strategy, and collectible card building games in one video game. There will be four new minions in the game at PAX, along with 11 new cards to be added to any deck. This July players will be able to experience the Online Deck Builder through cloud-save, which allows them to build their decks for the first time to anyone that pre-orders. Players can test out a variety of deck builds against an AI before using it against other players in online multiplayer later this summer.
David Steinwedel, Executive Producer of BitFlip Games, claims that they were inspired by classics such as Magic: The Gathering and Starcraft when making Minion Master. I can definitely see this borrowing elements from Magic with the deck-building, but I don’t think turn-based gameplay is similar to Starcraft. However, I could be wrong and there is a possible build in there to make an annoying horde of banelings.
Minion Master will be available on the PC this Fall. Anyone interested can pre-order Minion Master for 25% off before July 31st, along with getting a special in-game character. For more information, visit the Minion Master Web Site.
